The Firehouse Community Arts Center/Chicago

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For our 4th annual walk A Long Walk Home’s teen girls and their parents, will host “Beautiful Resistance: Freedom From Violence March” on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 1PM to speak out against the violence that African American girls and young women face. The march will begin in North Lawndale and end at the CTA 47th redline stop where 25-year-old, Jessica Hampton, the mother of six year old girl was fatally stabbed by her ex-boyfriend while bystanders looked on and recorded the attack on their phones. As part of the #sayhername campaign, we plan to lift up the names of Jessica and other black girls and women who have experienced violence in their homes, schools, and communities. Jessica’s last words were “help me”– help us be upstanders, not bystanders when community violence ensues, and march with love as we fight to make our world safer and more beautiful for us all.
